  • Today as a part of National Inclusion Week, we are highlighting the LGBTQ+ community which has faced persecution for centuries. Here are some interesting statistics to think about:

    • In the United States, an estimated 3.2 million children ages 8-18 are LGBTQ+. In grades 9-12, approximately 8% or 1.6 million children  identify as LGBTQ+, and nearly 1% or 150,000 children ages 13-17 identify as Transgender. It should also be noted that today, kids who identify as queer are 120% more likely to experience homelessness along with many other challenges.
    • Federal statutes currently protect schoolchildren by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, national origin, race, and religion, but do not explicitly protect students from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Maryland is one of only 20 states along with the District of Columbia that have anti-discrimination or anti-bullying laws that explicitly protect LGBT students. Despite all of the atrocities that the community has faced, as a society we have slowly become more accepting of those who identify with being LGBTQ+. In 2013, Maryland legalized same-sex marriage. Now, 10.2% of adults live happily with their same-sex spouse. To better understand the community, try going to Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) on Tuesdays right after school in Ms. Moore’s room, room 211.

  • It’s Wednesday, which means the maker space is open in the media center.  Come by during Scorp Time or lunch for today's project... snowflakes!
