STAR Scholarship

The STAR Scholarship is a private run scholarship that offers monetary rewards to students. This competitive scholarship program is open to all African American (black American of African descent) and 9th, 10th and 11th graders in the Howard County Public School System who meet the minimum requirements and want scholarship money to pay for future college and vocational school costs. Students must have a minimum gpa of 3.1 Please come to the Counseling Center to pick up an application. ALL applications are due back to your counselor by April 26th.

STAR SCHOLARSHIP For HIGH SCHOOLERS

The STAR Scholarship Foundation invites 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in Howard County Public Schools to apply for a $250 or 1,000 grant-in-aid scholarship.

  • Scholarships are provided for both academic and vocational schooling.
  • The potential exists to win three STAR Scholarships if a student applies in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.
  • Star Scholarships are based on GPA, significant GPA improvement, course difficulty, essay quality, significant accomplishments, recommendations and an interview.
  • The scholarship may be used for tuition, housing, books, or fees; and is paid directly to the college or vocational school.

Who can apply?  The STAR Scholarship is open to all African American (black American or African descent) and black 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in Howard County Public Schools who meet the minimum requirements and want scholarship money to pay for future college or vocational school costs. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Consistently above average grades, (GPA 3.1 or greater) in the previous school year or grades showing significant progressive improvement over three marking periods.
  • Plus, one or more of the following:
    • Significant academic accomplishments
    • Significant employment experience/employer recommendation
    • Significant volunteer efforts or community involvement
    • Responsibility in family life (Care for family member, contributing to family income)
    • Responsible participation in service-oriented or extracurricular activities

Application Process – Student must submit the following:

  • Application Form
  • Transcript of Grades (For Current Year & Two Prior Years)
  • Student Essay 
  • Recommendations/Testimonials  (see application for specifics)

IMPORTANT DATES:

  • April 26, 2017 – Student Applications due to high school counselors
  • April 28, 2017 – Counselors must submit collected applications to Lisa Beschner in the Office of Curricular Programs by 4:00 p.m.
  • STAR Scholarship Ceremony – Date to be determined
