Morning Announcements - Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Wed, 02/08/2017 - 12:25pm
  • The SAT word of the day is immolate. Immolate is a verb meaning to sacrifice; to kill, as a sacrificial victim, especially by fire. Many people remember television pictures of the Buddhist monks who would immolate themselves in protest of the Vietnam War; the vivid images of the monks setting themselves on fire have endured decades after the war.

  • The answer to yesterday's trivia question, the people who tried to integrate facilities at bus terminals in the South went on freedom rides. And now today's question - Under French colonization, abundant sugar plantations made it the richest colony of the Caribbean. A slave revolt broke out in 1791 and after defeating Napoleon's forces, former slaves declared independence in January 1, 1804 making it the world’s first independent black republic. Which country is it?
