Morning Announcements - Friday, February 24, 2017

Fri, 02/24/2017 - 8:06am
  • The SAT word of the day is beseech. Beseech is a verb meaning to ask or entreat with urgency; to supplicate; to implore. Once Khalil had seen her kitten, Charlene had to beseech him not to tell the landlord that she had a pet in her apartment.

  • The answer to yesterday’s question - In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court ruled that prohibiting interracial marriage on state and local levels was unconstitutional. And now today’s question- In 1951 doctors at Johns Hopkins and other scientists used this black woman’s cells without her knowledge. She died that same year from cervical cancer. HeLa cells (the code name for her cells) became one of the most important tools in medicine and were used to develop the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Who was HeLa?

  • Congrats to Kayla B, Rosa, Madison and Blen who presented on behalf of OMHS and the SGA at the Board of Education last night.  Each high school takes a turn to showcase all the best of each school.  Our group shared student and staff successes and upcoming events.  Major Scorpion Pride!

  • The 2A West Sectional Playoffs are today here at OM. The girls play Liberty at 5 PM, and the boys play Marriott’s Ridge at 7 PM. Admission for this double header is $6. No passes are accepted at playoff games, so you will have to buy a ticket.  Also, there is no re-entry. That means if you leave, you will have to pay another $6 to return to the game. Come out and support the Scorps!

  • Anyone interested in trying out for girls’ lacrosse should meet with Coach Pro in the cafeteria today during lunch.

  • Hey OM!  One round of auditions for the Spring Musical Revue has taken place but we have one more day for auditions today from 3 PM to 7 PM. If you've ever thought it might be fun to perform on stage, or if you've ever wondered what it would be like to be part of the theater, this is your opportunity to try!  No experience is necessary.  Just bring a sense of fun and a willingness to learn and you, too, can be a part.  For more information see Mr. Hale in the band area or see the notice next to the theater bulletin board.  Remember, today from 3 PM to 7 PM.  Who knows, you may be a star in the making!

  • Anyone who wants to play softball this spring should submit their paperwork to coach Yarn no later than today. If you still need paperwork, see Coach Yarn in room 407. Softball workouts continue on today at 2:30 in Coach Yarn's room.

  • Attention seniors: Are you interested in speaking at Commencement? Do you have words of wisdom you would like to share with your fellow students, parents, siblings, and teachers? Applications are available in your English 12 classes. We will be holding auditions for speakers on Wednesday, March 1, from 2:30-3:30. If you are interested, please sign up with Ms. Grubb or Ms. Swartz by Monday, February 27th.

  • Ladies, do you need a dress for the prom? If so, stop by Atholton High School on Saturday, March 4th between 9 AM and 2:00 PM for the 4th Annual Pretty & Polished Affair. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Becca’s Closet is hosting the event that will provide free prom attire, personal shoppers, fashion tips, raffles and much more!

  • If you like to have fun and hang out with a like minded group of people, come join the ping pong club after school on Mondays and Wednesdays in the JROTC room, room 509. Students who don't know how to play can learn, and experienced players can be challenged. All are welcome.

  • The merit cart will be open during all lunches on Monday. Please don't forget to bring your merits to lunch.

  • Today for lunch we are having popcorn chicken, glazed turkey ham & Swiss, or chicken patty sandwich.
